A controversy has erupted between the Central Government and the West Bengal Government over an alleged protocol lapse during President Droupadi Murmu’s recent visit to the state. The Union Government has asked the West Bengal administration to provide a detailed explanation regarding the issue. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, seeking clarification on several lapses reported during the President’s visit.
The Centre raised questions about why the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, and Director General of Police were not present to receive the President as per protocol. It also pointed out that the washroom arranged for the President reportedly had no water and that the route of the presidential convoy was littered with garbage. The Centre has asked the state government to explain what action has been taken against officials including the Darjeeling District Magistrate, Siliguri Police Commissioner, and Additional District Magistrate. The state has been given time until 5 PM on Sunday to submit its explanation. President Murmu had travelled to West Bengal to attend the International Santal Conference, but the event was shifted at the last minute after permission was reportedly denied, resulting in a limited number of attendees. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed strong displeasure over the incident.
