Google CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed that nearly 75% of the code at Google is now being generated by Artificial Intelligence, marking a major shift in the company’s development process. Speaking at the Google Cloud Next 2026 event in Las Vegas, he noted that this figure has grown rapidly from about 30% in April 2025 to 75% within a year. AI has evolved from being a support tool for engineers to becoming a primary contributor in writing code, significantly accelerating project timelines and improving efficiency.
Despite concerns about job security, Pichai clarified that AI will not replace engineers but will transform their roles. Engineers are now focusing more on reviewing, validating, and guiding AI-generated code rather than writing it from scratch. This shift allows them to concentrate on larger system design and complex problem-solving. With AI enabling faster development cycles—sometimes completing projects up to six times quicker—the technology industry is expected to undergo profound changes in the coming years.
