Actor Taapsee Pannu has expressed concern that women-centric films are gradually disappearing due to a lack of audience support in theatres. Speaking during promotions for her upcoming film Assi, directed by Anubhav Sinha and set for release on the 20th of this month, she shared insights about the challenges faced by such films in the industry. Taapsee revealed that she visited courts and interacted with legal professionals to prepare for her role, observing how a woman public prosecutor handled sensitive cases with composure rather than overt emotion. The experience helped her understand the emotional restraint required to portray the character authentically.
She further stated that audiences often assume meaningful, content-driven films will eventually arrive on OTT platforms, but streaming services usually prefer movies that perform well in theatres. According to her, if viewers do not support diverse films on the big screen, such cinema risks fading away. Taapsee emphasised that filmmakers cannot blame audiences for failures while repeatedly producing similar content. She added that actors like her face more struggles than victories while attempting to bring unconventional stories to life, stressing that strong theatrical support is essential for women-led narratives to thrive. She also expressed happiness over the success of female-driven films like Mardaani 3, saying such achievements encourage meaningful storytelling.
