Veteran special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam has revealed that Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was deeply shaken when the verdict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case was delivered. In a recent interview, Nikam said Dutt trembled with fear after the court convicted him under the Arms Act and ordered that he be taken back into custody. He recalled that the actor repeatedly insisted he had done nothing wrong.
Nikam further stated that he strongly opposed granting Sanjay Dutt relief under the Probation of Offenders Act. He argued before the court that Dutt had obtained a firearm from a close associate of Dawood Ibrahim and knowingly retained the weapon despite being aware of the individual's criminal background. While the prosecution sought a seven-year prison sentence, the Supreme Court ultimately awarded a five-year jail term. Nikam also recalled encouraging Dutt to remain composed before the media following the verdict.
