Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has offered a controversial yet striking solution to tackle the ever-growing problem of movie piracy. Taking to social media, the director commented on the ongoing debate surrounding "Robin Hood Ravi"—a key figure allegedly involved in supplying pirated films online.
In a strongly worded post on X, RGV said the real reason piracy continues is not technology or weak law enforcement but the massive audience willing to consume pirated content.
He wrote,
“Piracy will never stop as long as lakhs of people are ready to watch stolen films. Where there is demand, there will always be Ravis to supply them. The funniest thing is people comparing Ravi to Robin Hood as if it’s some noble logic.”
RGV further argued that Robin Hood should not be seen as a hero, claiming that by modern standards, he would be considered a terrorist for stealing from the rich and rewarding the poor.
“It is dangerous to glorify a criminal simply because the beneficiaries receive free stolen goods,” he said.
Taking a sarcastic dig at those who defend piracy citing high movie ticket prices, RGV added,
“If that logic is valid, then people should also support breaking into a BMW showroom and distributing cars for free.”
He warned that such thinking leads to social collapse and anarchy, pointing out that convenience—not morality—is why most people choose pirated content. He even claimed that many within the film industry themselves resort to piracy to save time and avoid inconvenience.
Finally, RGV proposed a radical solution:
“To truly stop piracy, criminalize not just the supplier but also the viewer. Catching pirates is difficult because they hide behind digital networks, but catching viewers is easy. Arrest 100 people watching pirated content and make their names public.”
RGV’s comments have triggered intense debate online about ethics, enforcement, and the future of digital piracy in India.
