The unmatched aura of Superstar Rajinikanth—immortalised through iconic films like Baasha and Sivaji: The Boss—continues to be nothing short of legendary. As the world celebrates his birthday today, December 12th, it’s the perfect moment to look beyond the mass hysteria and revisit the man behind the megastar. Here are some fascinating, lesser-known facts that make his journey even more extraordinary.
A truly well-deserved honour came his way in the year 2000, when Rajinikanth was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award. It was a powerful recognition of his unmatched contribution to Indian cinema and a celebration of his legacy as an artist loved across generations.
Though he became the undisputed ‘Thalaivar’ of Tamil cinema, Rajinikanth’s roots trace back to Maharashtra. Marathi is his mother tongue, and he was born in a Maharashtrian family. His father, a police officer, was transferred to Bengaluru, where young Rajinikanth grew up. From there, fate guided him towards the world of cinema.
His rise in films was unbelievably rapid. Rajinikanth reached the milestone of 50 films in just four years, an astonishing feat by any standard. His fifth release, Tiger (1979), was just one of the many films that showcased his growing dominance and unmatched screen presence.
Before superstardom embraced him, Rajinikanth lived a simple life. He worked as a bus conductor in Bengaluru, famously on the Shivaji Nagar–Samrajpet route, bus number 134. Those days shaped his discipline and helped him save enough money to pursue his passion for acting at a film institute in Chennai.
Rajinikanth is also known as the master of remakes. He starred in 11 remakes of iconic Bollywood films, many of which originally featured Amitabh Bachchan. With his unique charisma and style, he turned every single one of them into massive blockbusters.
His magic soon crossed borders. Rajinikanth made his Hindi debut with Andhaa Kanoon in 1983. The film was a massive hit and ran for nearly 50 weeks, making his entry into Bollywood nothing short of triumphant.
Wishing Superstar Rajinikanth a very Happy Birthday—may his charisma, legacy, and inspiring journey continue to shine for generations.
