The Delhi High Court gave a big shock to the famous music director Ilayaraja. In a case filed by popular music company Saregama, the court issued an interim order and directed Ilayaraja to refrain from commercial use of some sound recordings and music works related to more than 130 films. Saregama argued that the copyrights of the songs belong to the company.
According to the Saregama company, although the producers of the respective films had earlier assigned the rights to use the songs to the company worldwide, Ilayaraja claimed that licensing to third parties and releasing the songs on platforms like Amazon Music, iTunes, JioSavan was a violation of copyright.
The court recalled that under the Copyright Act – 1957, the producer of the film usually has the first right of copyright. It issued an interim order stating that it was necessary to protect the company's rights at this stage based on the agreements. It is already known that the court has already ruled in favor of Saregama in the dispute over the rights of the song 'En Iniya Pon Nilave'.
