Cancer is currently spreading silently and affecting people of all ages, from young children to the elderly. In recent times, the number of oral cancer cases has increased significantly. Oral cancer is primarily identified as a type of cancer that begins on the lips or tongue. According to health experts, it can affect the lips, tongue, gums, inner cheeks, the lining of the mouth and even the back of the throat.
Doctors warn that oral cancer is largely caused by habits such as chewing tobacco, paan, gutkha, smoking and alcohol consumption. Several studies have revealed that more than 60 percent of cancer cases reported in India are linked to tobacco and alcohol use. In particular, over 62 percent of oral cancer cases are attributed to these habits. Health specialists explain that alcohol produces a toxic substance called acetaldehyde in the body, which damages DNA in oral cells and significantly increases the risk of cancer. Therefore, medical experts strongly advise avoiding alcohol consumption and smoking as much as possible.
The early symptoms of oral cancer usually begin as a small sore. Initially, a sore may appear on the lips or gums and may not heal, gradually spreading to the tongue and inner cheeks. In some cases, sores may also develop in the jaw area. Additionally, the appearance of white or red patches on the tongue, gums, or the lining of the mouth is considered an early warning sign of oral cancer. If such symptoms persist for more than two weeks, health professionals emphasize the importance of not ignoring them and consulting a doctor immediately for proper medical evaluation and necessary tests.
