Not brushing your teeth is not just a dental issue – it can lead to life-threatening health problems like heart disease, lung infections, and even oral cancer. Within 20 minutes of eating, bacteria in the mouth convert sugar and starch into acid that starts damaging the tooth enamel. Within 4-6 hours, plaque forms; in 12 hours it hardens into tartar, and within 24 hours you can experience swollen gums, bleeding, and bad breath. Experts from AIIMS say that skipping brushing for just one day can cause up to a million new bacteria to multiply in your mouth.
Long-term poor oral hygiene increases the overall risk of death by 25%, according to a study published in The Lancet journal. If someone doesn’t brush for a whole year, their risk of heart disease triples because oral bacteria enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation in the arteries. The same bacteria can also trigger pneumonia and lung infections. Surprisingly, even non-smokers who neglect brushing have a significantly higher chance of developing oral cancer. Therefore, brushing twice daily is not optional – it is essential for protecting your entire body and can literally be a life-saving habit.
Note :
Skipping brushing in winter due to cold water can triple heart disease risk and raise chances of pneumonia & oral cancer, warn AIIMS and Lancet studies.
