During the summer season, many people prefer mint chutney as it helps cool the body. However, only a few are fully aware of its wide-ranging health benefits. According to Dr. Phanindra Bhushan Diwan, Ayush Medical Officer at Janjgir Champa District Hospital, mint leaves are rich in medicinal properties and offer significant health advantages. They contain essential nutrients such as vitamins, copper, manganese and carbohydrates, all of which are important for the human body. Mint supports healthy digestion and provides relief from headaches and respiratory discomfort. Drinking mint-infused water during summer can help reduce body heat. The antioxidants, menthol and phytonutrients present in mint aid digestion, while peppermint’s essential oils possess antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help relieve stomach discomfort, acidity and gas.
Regular consumption of mint can help reduce chest congestion. Menthol acts as a natural decongestant by loosening mucus in the lungs and reducing nasal swelling. It also helps relax muscles and alleviate pain. Applying mint juice to the forehead may provide relief from headaches. Mint is considered effective in reducing nausea, including morning sickness. Chewing a few mint leaves or inhaling their aroma in the morning may help pregnant women manage nausea. Additionally, mint’s refreshing fragrance helps reduce stress and rejuvenate both the body and mind.
Mint also offers several skin and oral health benefits due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The high salicylic acid content in mint helps prevent acne and cleanse the skin, while its antioxidant properties eliminate free radicals, promoting clear and youthful-looking skin. Mint oil helps maintain fresh breath and using a mint-based mouthwash can reduce oral bacteria, supporting healthy gums and teeth. Research suggests that mint may enhance memory and cognitive function. Applying a paste made from ground mint leaves to the face may help reduce blemishes and improve skin texture.
