Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday launched the expanded Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme for school students. The programme was inaugurated at the Government Middle School in Gandhi Gramam, Tiruvanmiyur, Chennai, where Vijay served breakfast to students and later joined them for the meal. He also visited classrooms and interacted with the students. The scheme, which was earlier implemented for students up to Class 5, has now been extended to students of Classes 6 to 8, bringing around 15.30 lakh additional students under its coverage.
The expanded programme will cover 15,454 government and government-aided schools across Tamil Nadu. The state has allocated an additional ₹217.63 crore for the expansion during the current financial year, taking the total allocation for the breakfast scheme to ₹724 crore. The government said the scheme aims to provide nutritious food to students, ensure they attend school without hunger and support their health and educational development.
