Amid continuing tensions between the United States and Iran, the US Central Command has made fresh allegations against Tehran. It claims that Iranian leaders are using secret underground and land transit routes to transport weapons and other illegal materials into the country from neighbouring nations. According to the command, military officials are taking steps to establish a specialised 20-member task force to identify these routes and monitor their activities.
The US has been enforcing restrictions on ports and international waterways around Iran, including the Strait of Hormuz. Washington alleges that Tehran is relying on alternative land routes to bypass these restrictions and move weapons and other supplies. The proposed task force will focus on curbing Iran's alleged efforts to fund militant organisations, rebuild weapons manufacturing facilities and strengthen its military capabilities. The unit is expected to operate from Florida and may include both military personnel and civilians.
