Andhra Pradesh is set to receive a major boost in tourism as the Central Government is considering Tirupati and Visakhapatnam for development under the 'Challenge-Based Destination Development' initiative of the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme. If selected, each city will receive ₹500 crore over five years to transform 50–100 acres into world-class integrated tourism destinations. The initiative aims to enhance visitor experiences by providing modern infrastructure, digital services, safety, accommodation, and seamless travel facilities for both domestic and international tourists.
The programme focuses on sustainable tourism, digital transformation, skill development, tourism-based MSMEs, and destination management in line with the Goa Roadmap. Andhra Pradesh has already submitted proposals for both cities, with land identified in Tirupati and the process underway in Visakhapatnam. The Centre has also emphasised community participation, preservation of local culture, and increased public-private partnerships to ensure long-term economic growth and employment through tourism.
