Low-pressure systems that normally develop over the Bay of Bengal during the April-December period have followed an unusual pattern this year. Instead of moving towards the southern parts of the Bay of Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, the systems formed so far have remained concentrated near the Bengal and northern Odisha coasts.
Typically, low-pressure systems developing over the southern Andaman Sea and adjoining areas can strengthen into depressions and cyclones. Depending on the season, these systems generally move towards Myanmar, Bangladesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu. However, systems forming close to the coast have a lower chance of intensifying. Weather experts believe El Niño may be influencing the current pattern. Whether future systems will form closer to the Andhra Pradesh coast and bring much-needed rainfall remains to be seen.
