The draft committee constituted for the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Madhya Pradesh has submitted its final report, recommending several regulations for live-in relationships. According to the draft, couples entering a live in relationship must register with the District Registrar in their area. If the relationship ends, it must be officially dissolved. Violating these rules could attract a jail term of up to three months. The state government is expected to introduce the draft bill during the upcoming Assembly monsoon session.
The committee has also proposed that live in couples inform their parents about their relationship and that police stations maintain records of such couples. Neighbours or landlords may also report live in relationships. The draft further states that if a man abandons his partner, he must provide maintenance to the woman. It also recommends changes to inheritance laws by granting property rights to the deceased's father along with the spouse, children, and mother. The proposed UCC aims to replace religion specific personal laws with a common legal framework, while exempting tribal communities in the initial phase.
