Telangana has emerged as the leading state in India in terms of electricity consumption growth, recording an impressive 20.5 percent increase in April 2026 compared to the same month last year. According to the latest report of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Telangana secured the top position ahead of Bihar (20.1%), Karnataka (19%), and Andhra Pradesh (11.9%). The state's power consumption rose from 7,430 million units (MU) in April 2025 to 8,953 MU in April 2026. Experts attribute this sharp rise to rapid industrial expansion, growth in the construction sector, and overall economic development across the state.
Telangana also ranked eighth nationally in total electricity consumption during the 2025-26 financial year, with usage reaching 87,266 million units. The state has witnessed significant growth in electricity connections as well. Household power connections increased from 1.37 crore to over 1.40 crore within a year, marking the highest annual growth since the state's formation. Agricultural electricity connections crossed 30.36 lakh, with more than 1.08 lakh new borewell connections provided during the year. Telangana now ranks second in the country, after Uttar Pradesh, in agricultural power connections, with nearly 40 percent of the state's electricity supply being utilized by the agriculture sector.
