Telangana’s electricity demand has surged to an unprecedented level, registering an all-time high of 19,543 MW on September 9. This is the highest peak demand recorded in the history of Telangana and the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh. The demand remained elevated in the following days, touching 19,467 MW on Thursday and 18,954 MW on Friday. Officials attributed the sharp rise primarily to scorching temperatures, a lack of rainfall and increased power consumption during the prevailing weather conditions.
The surge in electricity demand is not confined to Telangana, with power consumption increasing significantly at the national level as well. Officials of power utilities said the country has witnessed an additional demand of nearly 100 GW. The record demand in Telangana highlights the growing pressure on the state’s power infrastructure during periods of extreme weather, as households, agriculture and other sectors increase their reliance on electricity.
