A US-based company, Reflect Orbital, has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch a satellite equipped with a massive mirror into space. Named “Earendel-1,” the satellite will carry a 60-foot reflective mirror designed to redirect sunlight back to Earth during nighttime. Positioned at an altitude of 640 kilometers, the satellite is expected to be launched by the end of this year, marking a significant step toward innovative space-based lighting solutions.
If successful, the project could illuminate a circular area of up to 5 kilometers in diameter at night. This breakthrough technology could extend operational hours for solar power plants, boost electricity generation, and provide emergency lighting during disasters. Additionally, it can be used in construction, agriculture, and industrial sectors. Reflect Orbital aims to expand this initiative further, with plans to deploy over 50,000 satellites by 2035.
