Hi Movie Review: Is This Nayanthara-Kavin Starrer a Miss or a Hit?

Release Date: August 28, 2026

Starring: Nayanthara, Kavin, Bhagyaraj, Radhika Sarathkumar, Prabhu, VTV Ganesh and Others

Director: Vishnu Edavan

Producers: Vignesh Shivan, Nayanthara, S.S. Lalit Kumar

Music Director: Jen Martin

Cinematographers: Rajesh Shukla, Leon Britto

Editor: Philomin Raj

Story:

Subrahmanyam (Kavin) is a soft-spoken and timid young man from Rajahmundry who has repeatedly faced rejection in matters of love. When his parents arrange his marriage, he decides to leave home. At the same time, Devasena (Nayanthara), a strong-willed woman from Bhimavaram, walks away from an arranged marriage she does not want. Their paths cross in Hyderabad, and the relationship that develops between them forms the core of the story.

Plus Points:

Nayanthara delivers a sincere performance in a role that feels familiar to her, while Kavin brings a contrasting personality to the proceedings and performs adequately. The lead pair shares a decent chemistry, with a few of their scenes working reasonably well.

Bhagyaraj makes an impression despite having limited screen time. A handful of comedy sequences provide some entertainment, while Jen Martin’s music stands out as one of the film’s better aspects.

Minus Points:

The biggest weakness of the film is its predictable storyline. The basic premise feels familiar and does not offer anything particularly fresh. Stronger writing and more effective execution could have made the familiar plot considerably more engaging.

The film loses momentum in the second half, with the narrative becoming stretched in several portions. Although there are occasional comedy moments, they are not enough to maintain a consistent pace.

Technical Aspects:

Director Vishnu Edavan shows potential but struggles to make his debut feature consistently engaging. The screenplay could have been tighter and the romantic track needed stronger writing. Better staging and sharper transitions between scenes could have improved the overall impact.

Rajesh Shukla and Leon Britto’s cinematography is adequate, while Jen Martin’s music adds some value to the film. Philomin Raj’s editing could have been crisper, particularly in the portions where the narrative slows down. Production values are decent and the Telugu dubbing is satisfactory.

Verdict:

Overall, Hi is a predictable romantic drama that relies on familiar situations rather than offering a fresh perspective. Nayanthara and Kavin deliver decent performances and share workable chemistry, while a few comedy scenes and the music provide some positives. However, weak writing, an uneven second half, underutilised supporting actors and a lengthy runtime hold the film back. It falls short of delivering the emotional impact expected from a romantic drama.

Rating:

2/5
