The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala within the next 2–3 days. Conditions are currently favorable for its further advancement over parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and regions of the central and northeastern Bay of Bengal. The monsoon is also expected to progress across several other regions, although earlier predictions had estimated its arrival around May 26, later revised to the following week.
However, meteorologists note that El Nino conditions are influencing the monsoon pattern this year, potentially resulting in below-normal rainfall. Weak wind patterns over the Arabian Sea are currently delaying the onset. Experts clarify that the monsoon is officially declared only after sustained rainfall over Kerala and consistent wind activity. A delay of a few days is not considered abnormal, and a delay is officially recognized only if it crosses June 8.
