Raksha Bandhan is one of the most cherished festivals celebrating the special bond between brothers and sisters. On this occasion, sisters traditionally tie a rakhi around their brothers’ wrists, praying for their well-being, happiness, health and protection. While choosing a rakhi, many people consider not only its colour and design but also the symbols featured on it, based on traditional religious beliefs.
Red, yellow and saffron are traditionally considered auspicious colours, while rakhis made with sacred threads such as mauli or kalava are also given special importance. Rakhis featuring Om, Swastika, Lord Ganesha or Rudraksha are considered शुभ by some devotees. Black rakhis have varying interpretations across traditions and are not universally considered inauspicious. Devotees are also advised to choose comfortable rakhis without sharp or uncomfortable decorations. Raksha Bandhan 2026 will be celebrated on Friday, August 28, and the appropriate tying time should be checked with the local panchang because timings can vary by location. Traditionally, three knots are considered auspicious, although some families follow their own customs. Ultimately, the love, affection and good wishes behind the rakhi are considered more important than its price or decoration.
