Putrada Ekadashi is considered an important spiritual observance during the Shravana month. According to Hindu tradition, the Ekadashi that falls during the Shukla Paksha of Shravan is known as Putrada Ekadashi. Devotees traditionally worship Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna on this day and observe the vrat seeking blessings for children, family well-being and prosperity. The name “Putrada” is associated with the belief that the vrat grants the blessing of children. Devotees may observe a complete fast or choose a simple, sattvic diet according to their health and capacity.
The vrat traditionally begins with an early-morning bath, followed by prayers and offerings of Tulasi leaves, sandalwood, turmeric flowers and fruits. Devotees chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”, listen to or read the Putrada Ekadashi vrat story and perform evening prayers and aarti. On Dwadashi, the fast is traditionally concluded after sunrise, followed by charity or feeding the needy or Brahmins according to one’s capacity. After breaking the fast, light sattvic food such as fruits, rice and green gram may be consumed. Spiritual beliefs surrounding the vrat should be understood as matters of faith, and practices may be followed according to individual circumstances and family traditions.
