Amid the ongoing global oil crisis triggered by tensions in West Asia, Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens to reduce petrol and diesel consumption. The Prime Minister encouraged people to adopt electric vehicles, prioritize work-from-home arrangements, and prefer online meetings wherever possible. He also advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel. Following the appeal, discussions intensified across the country, with speculation emerging on social media about whether lockdown-like restrictions could return. However, several nations around the world have already implemented similar fuel-saving measures to tackle the energy crisis.
According to the International Energy Agency, over 40 countries and the European Commission have initiated fuel conservation measures following the West Asia conflict and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. Countries including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and South Korea have introduced work-from-home policies, AC temperature limits, travel restrictions, fuel rationing, and vehicle usage controls. Some nations are encouraging voluntary savings, while others are enforcing strict regulations. Several countries have also shifted educational institutions to online classes, limited foreign travel for officials, and imposed restrictions on electricity usage to reduce energy consumption.
