Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju has criticised Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde for signing peace bonds. Katju argued that signing the documents could restrict their participation in public protests. He questioned their decision, alleging that they had acted out of fear of imprisonment, and compared them to individuals who apologised during British rule. He also referred to the four leaders as the “Gang of Four”. These remarks reflect Katju’s personal views on the issue.
Meanwhile, Katju praised AISA student leader Neha Bora, who reportedly refused to sign a peace bond, maintaining that peaceful protest is a constitutional right. CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were released from jail after submitting written undertakings to maintain peace. The developments have renewed debate over the right to peaceful protest, the implications of signing peace bonds and the balance between maintaining public order and protecting democratic freedoms.
