India’s Semiconductor Journey Enters a New Phase - PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India has entered the second phase of its semiconductor journey, noting that the country has achieved in four years what generally takes the world about a decade. He made the remarks while inaugurating SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi. Modi said India is now moving from building semiconductor capabilities towards commercial chip production.

Modi also highlighted the need to strengthen the wider semiconductor ecosystem, including chip design, manufacturing, equipment, materials, testing, packaging and skilled manpower. He said the government is focusing on developing young talent for the sector. SEMICON India 2026 is being held from September 17 to 19 and brings together more than 600 companies and representatives from 52 countries. The event is themed “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.”
