India is preparing to inaugurate its first hydrogen-powered train on July 17, 2026, marking a significant step toward green and sustainable railway transportation. The train will begin operations on the Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway and is powered by a 1200 kW hydrogen fuel cell, producing only water vapour and heat during operation, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional trains.
The 10-coach train has been designed and developed using indigenous technology under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It can accommodate around 2,600 passengers and operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph. Jind is also home to India's largest railway hydrogen storage and refuelling facility, while advanced safety features, including hydrogen leak detectors, flame detectors, and round-the-clock monitoring systems, ensure safe and reliable operations.
