Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority is preparing plans to introduce ropeway systems in Hyderabad, inspired by the Varanasi public transport model. The project is being designed under the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) to serve both tourism and urban transportation needs. Officials are considering ropeway connectivity between metro and railway stations, commercial hubs and major tourist destinations to reduce traffic congestion in the city. The proposed system is expected to be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to avoid financial burden on the government.
As part of the initial phase, officials are exploring a 2-kilometre ropeway corridor connecting Golconda Fort and the nearby tombs area, with future plans to extend connectivity up to the zoo park through an aerial route. Another proposal includes a ropeway between Tank Bund and Sanjeevaiah Park. Experts believe ropeways could significantly reduce travel time in highly congested areas, especially during peak traffic and monsoon seasons, provided safety standards and affordable ticket pricing are maintained.
