GENCO Flags Singareni Coal Quality

A study conducted by Telangana GENCO has revealed that poor-quality coal supplied from Singareni Collieries has significantly affected power generation across the state's thermal power plants. According to the report, substandard coal resulted in a loss of 9,593 million units of electricity between April 2024 and June 2026. GENCO suggested that high-grade coal from Singareni's Naini mine in Odisha, currently supplied to Tamil Nadu power plants, should instead be allocated to Telangana. It also recommended procuring quality coal from Coal India's Korba mines in Chhattisgarh to improve generation efficiency.

The report noted that thermal power plants are required to use coal of a specified grade under environmental regulations, but Singareni has increasingly supplied coal below the prescribed quality. Only 44% of the coal supplied in 2024–25 and 27% in 2025–26 met the required standards. In April 2025–26 alone, only 6.39 lakh tonnes out of 16.78 lakh tonnes supplied met the prescribed grade. As a result, power generation declined, forcing DISCOMs to purchase expensive electricity from power exchanges to meet demand.
