The first phase of the population census in Telangana has been completed, with preliminary estimates indicating that the state's population has crossed 4.20 crore. The Census Department conducted the initial enumeration from May 11 to June 9, collecting household-level information across the state. Officials stated that families who were not covered during the survey can report the matter to their nearest municipal or panchayat office by Thursday. Based on the data collected so far, Telangana has recorded a significant increase in population compared to the 3.50 crore population registered during the 2011 Census.
Officials estimate that the state has added nearly 70 lakh people over the past 16 years, reflecting an annual growth rate of around 1.25 percent. The population within the old Greater Hyderabad limits, including areas up to the Outer Ring Road (ORR), is expected to exceed 1.5 crore. The number of households in Telangana has also risen from 83 lakh in 2011 to an estimated 1.20 crore. The second phase of the census is scheduled for February next year, during which detailed individual information will be collected. Final population figures are expected to be officially released by late 2027 or early 2028 after both phases are consolidated and verified.
