The Supreme Court of India today upheld the authority of the Election Commission of India to conduct the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Hearing multiple petitions challenging the process, the apex court observed that the revision exercise cannot be invalidated merely because its procedure differs from previous practices. The court emphasized that the Election Commission has the constitutional responsibility to ensure accurate electoral rolls.
The Supreme Court further stated that the Special Intensive Revision exercise strengthens the foundation of free and fair elections and helps maintain the credibility of the democratic process. The observations from the court are being seen as a significant relief for the Election Commission amid ongoing debates surrounding the revision process and electoral transparency.
