The explosive follower surge is attributed to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a viral satirical political movement that has taken over Indian social media. Founded on May 16, 2026, by Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old public relations postgraduate from Boston University, the movement emerged as a parody protest against a controversial remark allegedly made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who compared vocal unemployed youth online to “cockroaches.”
The movement quickly resonated with Gen-Z frustrations over unemployment, exam paper leaks, and institutional accountability. By May 21, the CJP Instagram account crossed 13.3 million followers, surpassing several major national political parties including the BJP. The sudden rise led to significant controversy, and its associated X (formerly Twitter) account was reportedly withheld in India following a legal request within hours of the milestone.
