Guntur chilli exports from Andhra Pradesh have suffered a major setback after Chinese authorities rejected and returned three containers of chilli shipments. The decision was reportedly taken after laboratory tests detected pesticide residues beyond the permissible limits. The development has raised concerns among chilli farmers and exporters, as China remains one of the important international markets for Indian chilli exports.
According to reports, excessive traces of the pesticide Methamidophos were found in the exported chilli consignments, violating international food safety standards. Farmer organizations have expressed serious concern over the issue and urged the Andhra Pradesh government to impose a complete ban on pesticides containing Methamidophos. They have also called for greater awareness among farmers regarding safe pesticide usage and export-quality production practices to protect the global reputation of Guntur chilli and safeguard future export opportunities.
