President Droupadi Murmu has promulgated an ordinance increasing the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court of India from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India. The decision comes after the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recently approved the proposal to increase the number of judges.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the move aims to ensure faster delivery of justice, considering that over 92,000 cases are currently pending before the Supreme Court. A bill regarding the increase in judicial strength is expected to be introduced in the upcoming Parliament session. At present, the Supreme Court has 32 serving judges, including the Chief Justice, while two positions remain vacant and four judges are set to retire before November this year.
