The Central Government is reportedly planning to introduce a fresh Delimitation Bill during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. Sources indicate that consultations with opposition parties have already begun, and several parties have responded positively. The government is attempting to build consensus by addressing concerns and avoiding political confrontation over the issue.
Earlier, the Centre had introduced the Women's Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill, but failed to secure the required two-thirds majority for a constitutional amendment. Out of 528 members present in the Lok Sabha, 298 voted in favour of the Bills, while 230 opposed them. The proposals fell short of the required 352 votes and were subsequently defeated.
Political developments in states such as West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are believed to have improved the government's prospects. Reports suggest that some opposition parties, including the TMC and DMK, are willing to discuss the revised proposal. The Centre is considering increasing Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850, while utilizing 816 seats initially. Officials argue that doubling seats in every state would ensure fairness, though critics fear it could reduce the political influence of southern states in Parliament.
