The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has removed a Diwali awareness video featuring actress Dia Mirza after it triggered a controversy. The civic body had launched a campaign encouraging people to celebrate an environmentally friendly Diwali without excessive noise and air pollution. As part of the campaign, it shared several videos on social media, including one in which Dia Mirza appealed to the public to avoid activities that contribute to pollution.
The video drew objections from BJP leader Amit Satam, who criticised the campaign and said people did not need lessons from anyone on how to celebrate Diwali, as the festival was an integral part of their culture. Following his objection, the video featuring Dia Mirza disappeared from the BMC's social media accounts. The civic body removed it without issuing an explanation. However, other videos promoting an eco-friendly Diwali, featuring actress Madhuri Dixit, cricketer Ajinkya Rahane and Marathi actor Nishigandha Wad, continued to remain online.
