K.V. Athulya from Palakkad, Kerala, has scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to obtain the prestigious Class 2 Air Commercial Diving License. Unlike recreational scuba diving, commercial diving involves high-risk underwater operations such as repairing oil and gas pipelines, maintaining internet cables, underwater welding, and working on large marine structures. The internationally recognized license is valid in more than 130 countries, marking a significant milestone for Indian women in a traditionally male-dominated profession.
Athulya's journey began during her college days when she first learned about scuba diving as a career option. Despite financial challenges and social barriers, she pursued professional diving training and became Kerala's first certified female scuba diver. Later, she worked as a diving instructor and trained coastal police and fire service personnel. Her determination eventually led her to South Africa, where she completed advanced commercial diving training and earned the globally recognized license, inspiring countless young women across the country.
