Anganwadi Eggs Fall Short of Prescribed Weight in Visakhapatnam

Eggs supplied to Anganwadi centres in Visakhapatnam Urban ICDS limits are allegedly falling short of the prescribed weight, raising concerns over the nutritional quality of the food provided to children. As per government norms, each egg should weigh around 50 grams, with 30 eggs in a tray expected to weigh about 1.5 kg excluding the tray. However, a recent inspection reportedly found a tray of 30 eggs weighing only 1.1 kg, resulting in a shortfall of about 400 grams. Similar allegations have also emerged regarding eggs supplied to schools.

The contractor is required to supply eggs four times a month and upload the distribution details on the designated app for payment to be processed. Anganwadi workers have reportedly alleged that they are not being allowed to weigh the eggs after delivery and face an indifferent response when they raise concerns. The Visakhapatnam Urban ICDS project covers 275 Anganwadi centres serving 6,345 children. ICDS Project Officer Neelima said steps are being taken to ensure that eggs meet the prescribed standards and that replacement eggs were ordered after a recent complaint about discoloured eggs.
