Panchalingala Temple, located in Panchalingala village near Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh, is an ancient and spiritually significant Shaivite pilgrimage centre. The temple is particularly famous for its unique feature of having five Shiva Lingams installed on a single pedestal. Situated in a peaceful setting along the banks of the Tungabhadra River, the shrine is associated with an interesting history and religious traditions. According to local temple legends, King Janamejaya performed a Sarpa Yagam (serpent sacrifice) in ancient times. He is believed to have installed numerous Shiva Lingams across different regions to overcome the dosha associated with the sacrifice. The five Lingams at this temple are traditionally believed to be the final installation in that series. Local legends further state that the king installed the five Lingams under the guidance of sages and spiritual scholars to seek relief from Sarpa Dosha.
The temple also holds historical significance, with stone inscriptions reportedly connecting it to the Vijayanagara Empire. Historical accounts associated with the shrine suggest that it gained prominence during the reign of Sri Krishnadevaraya and was known as the Virupaksha entrance. Devotees can also worship Lord Veerabhadra, Goddess Chamundi and Gaya Narayana Swamy within the temple premises. Since the shrine houses Gaya Narayana Swamy, the region was traditionally referred to as Dakshina Gaya. Devotees consider the five Shiva Lingams representations of the five elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. Many pilgrims visit the temple seeking relief from Sarpa Dosha and Navagraha Doshas, according to religious beliefs. The Tungabhadra River flowing towards the eastern side adds to the spiritual atmosphere of the shrine. Located approximately five kilometres from Kurnool city, the temple can be reached by buses and private vehicles. Visitors can also explore nearby spiritual destinations, including Bugga Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple, Kommacheruvu Anjaneya Swamy Temple and the famous Jogulamba Devi Temple at Alampur.
