With the 2028 U.S. presidential primaries approaching, an ideological contest is already taking shape within the Republican Party over who will inherit Donald Trump’s MAGA movement. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are emerging as the leading names in the early succession debate, with their differences over foreign policy and America’s military role abroad becoming increasingly visible. Trump has spoken positively about both Vance and Rubio, while speculation continues over whom he may ultimately support.
The divide extends beyond the two potential successors. Vance represents a more restrained, anti-interventionist approach, while Rubio is associated with a more traditional Republican foreign-policy outlook. Tucker Carlson has also emerged as a potential spoiler after breaking with Trump over issues including the Iran war, while far-right activist Nick Fuentes continues to influence parts of the younger online right. The generational divide is significant as well: Pew Research found that 63% of Republicans aged 50 and older consider an active U.S. role in world affairs important, compared with 38% among Republicans under 50. The battle over MAGA’s future could therefore shape the Republican field well before the 2028 primaries begin.
