The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has initiated new measures to strengthen data security and user privacy in the UPI payment ecosystem. As part of this move, NPCI has directed UPI apps and banks to mask users' mobile numbers during transactions to prevent unnecessary exposure of personal information.
NPCI has set September 4 as the deadline for implementing the new system. Mobile numbers currently play a key role in identifying users and verifying UPI transactions. However, concerns over privacy and data security due to the visibility of phone numbers during transactions prompted the regulator to introduce this safeguard.
