India’s internet user base has crossed 950 million in 2025, registering an 8% increase compared to 886 million users in 2024, according to the Internet in India Report 2025 released by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in collaboration with Kantar. The report highlights that 57% of internet users now come from rural areas, driven by rapid improvement in connectivity, growing popularity of short-form videos, and rising adoption of Artificial Intelligence tools.
The country recorded 958 million active internet users, of which nearly 548 million belong to rural India. Active user growth in rural areas is occurring at nearly four times the pace of urban regions. Short-video consumption surged nationwide, with 588 million viewers, slightly higher in rural areas and dominated by youth audiences. About 44% of users now use AI-based features such as voice search, image search, AI filters, and chatbots—rising to 57% among the 15–24 age group. Online shopping, including quick commerce and social commerce, continues to expand rapidly, especially in urban India. Despite this growth, around 579 million people are still not active internet users, though the number continues to decline annually. The findings are based on a nationwide survey of nearly one lakh respondents.
