

Indian Railways has achieved a major milestone in freight transportation with the completion of its Dedicated Freight Corridor network. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is being described as the world’s first fully electrified freight corridor designed to operate double-stack container trains. Unlike double-stack freight operations in some countries that rely on diesel locomotives, India’s corridor enables such heavy freight movement on an electrified network. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) was established in 2006 to develop dedicated routes for faster and more efficient freight transportation.
The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor spans 1,337 km, while the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor has a length of 1,506 km. With the commissioning of the final 326 km of the Western corridor, the combined DFC network has reached around 2,843 km. The elevated overhead electrical system, with clearances of around 7.45 metres, enables double-stack containers to be transported efficiently. These corridors can carry significantly more cargo per train while reducing fuel consumption and emissions and easing congestion on conventional railway lines. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the freight corridors as a backbone for India’s trade and logistics network. According to him, freight trains that earlier took around 6.5 hours to cover 100 km can now complete the distance in less than half that time, strengthening the efficiency of India’s supply chain.
