With the growing adoption of Artificial Intelligence, layoffs in the technology sector have become a major topic of discussion in recent times. In this context, a recent report suggesting large-scale job cuts at Microsoft created widespread concern. According to a TipRanks research report, the company was expected to lay off between 11,000 and 22,000 employees in January, potentially affecting divisions such as Azure Cloud Services, Xbox and Global Sales Operations. The report attributed the possible layoffs to rising operational costs and increased investments in artificial intelligence, causing the news to go viral on social media.
However, Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer Frank X. Shaw strongly refuted these claims, stating that the reports were completely baseless and that the information regarding layoffs was inaccurate. Windows Central Editor Jez Corden also dismissed the rumors. As of now, Microsoft has not issued an official company-wide statement on the matter.
It may be recalled that in July last year, Microsoft had laid off approximately 9,000 employees as part of its long-term restructuring strategy. During that period, the company also canceled several gaming projects and shut down certain studios. Notably, Microsoft’s market valuation crossed the $4 trillion mark in July last year.
