As Air India enters a crucial new phase, Tata Sons Chairman and Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has stressed the need for the airline to rebuild passenger confidence and strengthen its financial position. Speaking at a town hall meeting with Air India employees, Chandrasekaran introduced Tewolde Gebremariam, who is set to take charge as the airline’s new Managing Director and CEO, succeeding Campbell Wilson. Tewolde urged employees to work together to restore Air India’s former glory and declared that the airline would be made great again. The leadership transition comes at a challenging time for Air India, which has been dealing with financial pressures, operational disruptions and increased regulatory scrutiny following last year’s fatal accident.
Tewolde Gebremariam brings nearly four decades of experience in the aviation sector, including more than 11 years with Ethiopian Airlines. In his first address to Air India employees, he said the airline has a rich history, a strong brand and enormous potential. Recalling his association with Air India while working in Mumbai nearly two decades ago, he said the airline was then among the leaders in the aviation industry. He described the opportunity to help restore Air India to that position as a significant opportunity. Tewolde also stressed that safety must remain the airline’s highest priority and said employees should have a platform to openly raise their concerns and share their views.
