Adani Family Reclaims India’s Richest Spot

The Adani family has once again emerged as India’s wealthiest, overtaking the family of Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, according to the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026. Gautam Adani and his family’s wealth rose 13% to ₹9.23 lakh crore, or $96 billion. In contrast, Mukesh Ambani and his family’s wealth declined 10% to ₹8.63 lakh crore, leaving a gap of ₹59,400 crore between the two families.

Lakshmi Niwas Mittal of ArcelorMittal and his family secured third place, with their wealth nearly doubling to ₹3.39 lakh crore. Cyrus Poonawalla and his family of the Serum Institute ranked fourth, followed by Roshni Nadar Malhotra of HCL, Kumar Mangalam Birla of the Aditya Birla Group, Dilip Shanghvi of Sun Pharmaceuticals and Azim Premji of Wipro. Anil Agarwal and his family of Vedanta climbed to ninth place with a wealth of ₹2.08 lakh crore, while Samir Mehta and his family of Torrent Pharma ranked tenth. Adani first overtook Ambani in 2022, lost the top position in 2023, regained it in 2024, slipped again in 2025 and has now returned to the top.

Artificial intelligence has emerged as a separate sector in the Hurun list for the first time. The 19 people listed from the AI sector hold a combined wealth of ₹3.07 lakh crore. Nagendra Nagaraja, founder of Bengaluru-based QpiAI, became the first person from quantum computing to feature on the list, with wealth of ₹1,700 crore. Overall, 70% of those on the list are self-made entrepreneurs, up from 55% five years ago, taking their number to 1,266. The number of Indians with wealth of at least ₹1,000 crore rose by 128 to 1,810, while their combined wealth increased 12.8% to ₹187.5 lakh crore—nearly half of India’s GDP, according to Hurun. The country also added 27 dollar billionaires this year, bringing the total to 391, compared with 237 five years ago. Mumbai led with 465 people on the list, followed by Delhi with 236 and Bengaluru with 129. The list included 131 women, with Roshni Nadar Malhotra named India’s richest woman. A total of 156 people on the list live abroad, including 90 in the United States and 31 in the United Arab Emirates.
