YouTube has expanded its Likeness Detection tool to include journalists, civic leaders, and government officials. The feature was first introduced in October 2025 to help content creators identify videos that imitate their face or voice without permission. The tool was developed to reduce the misuse of artificial intelligence and protect individuals from harmful deepfake content.
The company stated that influential figures such as journalists and political leaders are often targeted by manipulated videos that can spread misinformation or create public unrest. By extending the tool to these groups, YouTube aims to strengthen safeguards against misleading or harmful digital content on its platform.
To access the feature, eligible users must complete a verification process that includes submitting a photo identification and a video recording of their face. These details help the platform recognise their likeness and detect deepfake content. YouTube clarified that the collected information will only be used for identity verification, stored securely for up to three years, and handled according to privacy guidelines.
