OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is said to be entering the AI-generated music space with a new tool that can create music using text or audio prompts. According to a report by The Information, the San Francisco-based AI leader is working on technology that can generate instrumental tracks, background scores, and even add instruments to vocals. The tool, which is still in the development stage, could also integrate with Sora-generated videos or other AI-driven projects. Sources claim that the system will likely run on a specialized large language model (LLM) designed for music generation.
In recent months, OpenAI has been expanding beyond text and chat applications. The company recently launched Sora, an AI video creation platform with a social feed, and ChatGPT Atlas, an AI browser. Now, with its upcoming AI music generator, OpenAI seems to be targeting yet another creative field.Interestingly, the company is reportedly collaborating with students from the Juilliard School, a world-renowned music institute, to annotate and refine the training data for this new model. However, it’s still unclear if this music tool will be released as a standalone product or integrated within ChatGPT.The AI music industry is already seeing strong competition from companies like Suno, Udio, and India’s Beatoven.ai. Suno, in particular, is leading the field and has reportedly reached $150 million (₹1,320 crore) in annual recurring revenue.
With OpenAI’s massive resources and expertise in AI, it will be fascinating to see whether it can redefine how music is composed and produced in the digital era.
