OpenAI may be ahead of schedule with its hardware development. Reports suggest the San Francisco-based AI company plans to unveil its first AI device later this year. While details are scarce, it is said to be an audio-focused wearable. However, the device is not expected to ship until early 2027. The company is reportedly working on three gadgets.
According to Axios, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane confirmed the company is “on track” to reveal its first hardware in the second half of 2026. Rumors indicate one wearable, a voice-controlled tabletop device and an AI Pen, though CEO Sam Altman has previously denied details.
In December 2025, reports suggested the devices reached the vendor selection stage, with Foxconn chosen over Luxshare and Vietnam set as the production site. Additionally, interface designer Janum Trivedi, formerly at Apple, Netflix, The Browser Company and Airbnb, has joined the project, contributing key features like Split View, Multitasking Drag & Drop and iPad Pointer Gestures.
