OpenAI has released a major update to its coding-focused platform Codex, introducing several advanced features to improve usability. The update includes computer control, image generation, web access, and personalisation tools. Initially, these features are available on macOS and will soon be rolled out to Windows and integrated development environments. Notably, the update was released on the same day Anthropic introduced its Claude Opus 4.7 model, which also focuses on software development improvements.
One of the most significant additions is the computer control feature, which allows Codex to operate a user’s desktop independently. It can view on-screen content, interact with applications, click icons, and type text using specialised agents. This feature can run in the background, allowing users to either monitor its actions or continue their own tasks. Additionally, Codex now includes an in-app browser that enables it to work directly with web content, along with the ability to generate and edit images.
OpenAI stated that these enhancements will benefit developers working on frontend design, testing, and project development. The platform also introduces over 90 new plugins, enabling better integration with various tools and services. Other updates include support for review comments, multiple terminal tabs, and remote connections. A new memory feature in preview will allow Codex to retain information from past sessions, helping improve efficiency and personalisation over time.
