OpenAI officials have clarified that no ads are appearing on paid tiers of ChatGPT, dismissing recent social media claims. The controversy began when users shared screenshots showing ads below prompt responses, even for those on paid subscriptions. OpenAI stated that what users saw was either “not ads or not real.” Mark Chen, Chief Research Officer, acknowledged that any feature within ChatGPT resembling an ad “needs to be handled with care,” admitting the company “fell short” in this instance.
The incident gained attention on December 3, when a user reported seeing an ad for Target while asking ChatGPT about Windows BitLocker. OpenAI explained that this was not an ad but an integrated app from a pilot partner, part of efforts to make app discovery more organic. Users argued that such integrations feel like ads when brands inject themselves into unrelated chats to encourage shopping.
In response, OpenAI confirmed that such suggestions have been turned off while improving the model’s precision. Controls are also being added so users can reduce or disable these suggestions entirely. Nick Turely, Head of ChatGPT, reaffirmed that no live ad tests are being conducted, and any screenshots showing ads are either inaccurate or not genuine. translate in spoken telugu dont give spelling mistakes
